But coach Frank Vogel announced before Saturday's game that his 7-foot-2 center would be starting. The eighth-seeded Hawks lead No. 1 seed Indiana 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Hibbert has struggled to cope with an Atlanta lineup that is spreading the court and forcing him away from the basket.

Analysis: In four games this season between the teams, Hibbert has averaged 14.0 points and just 3.0 rebounds per game. When Indiana and Miami met in the Eastern Conference finals last year, he recorded 22.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

How can teams acquire players who are entering their primes without having to live through the potentially massive transition of prospects coming from the minors to the big leagues? The Red Sox have two such case studies. The signing of Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo represents one effort to acquire a player for his prime years for whom the transition to big league-caliber competition might not be turbulent. Red Sox assistant director of player personnel discusses the scouting process involved with landing Castillo.
