He has had multiple knee operations since, though was able to help the Thunder reach the Western Conference finals. Colangelo says in a statement that the U.S. would love to have Westbrook but that "this is the right decision."

|Mar. 21 6:07 PM PT7:07 PM MT8:07 PM CT9:07 PM ET1:07 GMT9:07 6:07 PM MST8:07 PM EST5:07 UAE (+1)02:0721:07 ET7:07 PM CT0:07 - Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook left Friday's game against Toronto in the third quarter after appearing to injure his right knee. Westbrook, who sat out Thursday's win at Cleveland to rest the knee that was surgically repaired earlier this season, was injured when Toronto's Kyle Lowry collided with him on a pump-fake near the sideline with 7:37 left in the third quarter.
Analysis: After being struck on the knee by Lowry's leg, Westbrook immediately turned and called timeout, bending over in pain. He hobbled along the sideline for a few steps and was tended to briefly by the trainer before walking off the court with help from center Hasheem Thabeet. Westbrook scored 15 points against Toronto before leaving. A three-time All-Star, he came in averaging 21.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 36 games this season. Analysis: It wasn't a particularly impressive performance, but Miami is a tough matchup for one's first game in nearly two months.
|Feb. 20 12:47 PM PT1:47 PM MT2:47 PM CT3:47 PM ET20:47 GMT4:47 1:47 PM MST3:47 PM EST0:47 UAE (+1)21:4715:47 ET2:47 PM CT19:47 - Westbrook will play Thursday against the Miami Heat. The team announced the decision a few hours before tipoff.

The three-time NBA All-Star tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee during the second game of the playoffs last April. Westbrook underwent an operation after that injury and had another procedure on Oct. 1 to remove a loose stitch. Oklahoma City went 20-7 this season without him.
|Dec. 27 3:20 PM PT4:20 PM MT5:20 PM CT6:20 PM ET23:20 GMT7:20 4:20 PM MST6:20 PM EST3:20 UAE (+1)00:2018:20 ET5:20 PM CT21:20 - Westbrook had arthroscopic knee surgery Friday and will be sidelined until after the All-Star break. That means Westbrook will miss a minimum of 27 games. The five-year NBA player is averaging 21.3 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Thunder, who are 23-5 and a half-game behind first-place Portland in the Northwest Division. Reggie Jackson, who is averaging 12.5 points, is expected to replace Westbrook in the starting lineup.
Analysis: General manager Sam Presti said in a news release that Westbrook has been playing pain-free, but "recently had experienced increased swelling" in his right knee. Westbrook's knee problems began in April when he tore his meniscus in the second game of the Western Conference playoffs, sidelining him for the remainder of the postseason and all but ending Oklahoma City's chance to get to the NBA finals. He had a second arthroscopic surgery before training camp.

|Dec. 23 9:04 PM PT10:04 PM MT11:04 PM CT12:04 AM ET5:04 GMT13:04 10:04 PM MST12:04 AM EST9:04 UAE06:040:04 ET11:04 PM CT3:04 - Westbrook scored 24 and added nine rebounds and five assists in Sunday's 104-98 loss to Toronto.

|Dec. 22 11:45 PM PT12:45 AM MT1:45 AM CT2:45 AM ET7:45 GMT15:45 12:45 AM MST2:45 AM EST11:45 UAE08:452:45 ET1:45 AM CT5:45 - Westbrook had 31 points and eight assists and Oklahoma City used a strong second quarter to beat the San Antonio Spurs 113-100 for its ninth straight victory.
Analysis: It was the best scoring performance for the Thunder point guard since he had a season-high 34 in a win over Golden State on Nov. 29.
|Dec. 15 7:43 PM PT8:43 PM MT9:43 PM CT10:43 PM ET3:43 GMT11:43 8:43 PM MST10:43 PM EST7:43 UAE (+1)04:4322:43 ET9:43 PM CT1:43 - Westbrook had 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in Sunday's 101-98 win over Orlando.
Analysis: Fantasy owners may want to see more passes from Westbrook to get that triple-double but it's hard to quibble with this stellar performance that proves that the NBA is fantastic.
|Dec. 11 9:36 PM PT10:36 PM MT11:36 PM CT12:36 AM ET5:36 GMT13:36 10:36 PM MST12:36 AM EST9:36 UAE06:360:36 ET11:36 PM CT3:36 - Westbrook had 14 points and 11 assists for his second-consecutive double-double in Tuesday's win over Atlanta, but he was just 6 of 21 from the field.
Analysis: As we've seen in the past, Westbrook is often good news-bad news type player, particularly in terms of fantasy value. Double-digit assists are nice but owners are surely going to cringe at the 28.6 field-goal percentage from Tuesday. Westbrook has shot 36.8 percent or worse in seven of his 17 contests this season.
|Dec. 11 7:57 PM PT8:57 PM MT9:57 PM CT10:57 PM ET3:57 GMT11:57 8:57 PM MST10:57 PM EST7:57 UAE (+1)04:5722:57 ET9:57 PM CT1:57 - Westbrook had 27 points and nine assists in Wednesday's 116-100 win at Memphis.

Analysis: Westbrook is 19 for 33 over his last two games after going 33 for 92 (35.9 percent) in the previous five.
|Dec. 7 9:53 PM PT10:53 PM MT11:53 PM CT12:53 AM ET5:53 GMT13:53 10:53 PM MST12:53 AM EST9:53 UAE06:530:53 ET11:53 PM CT3:53 - Westbrook had 25 points and recorded four steals in Friday's win at New Orleans.
Analysis: Westbrook was 8 of 16 from the field, marking his first game with at least 50.0 percent shooting since Nov. 16. His 40.0 field-goal percentage is his lowest since his rookie season of 2008-09.
|Nov. 30 9:38 PM PT10:38 PM MT11:38 PM CT12:38 AM ET5:38 GMT13:38 10:38 PM MST12:38 AM EST9:38 UAE06:380:38 ET11:38 PM CT3:38 - Westbrook was the hero in Friday's thrilling 113-112 OT win over Golden State.
Analysis: Westbrook's corner 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in overtime. Westbrook scored a season-high 34 points on 10-of-25 shooting and added seven assists and five steals to help fantasy owners. But his heroic 3 was the story of the game especially since the play was drawn up for Kevin Durant. "When he tells people about this one, he doesn't have to exaggerate it because there's no bigger fish story than what he did tonight," coach Scott Brooks said.

Analysis: He continues to be inconsistent with his shot as he went 10 of 25 from the floor.
|Oct. 1 9:31 AM PT10:31 AM MT11:31 AM CT12:31 PM ET16:31 GMT0:31 9:31 AM MST11:31 AM EST20:31 UAE18:3112:31 ET11:31 AM CT15:31 - Westbrook is returning to the Oklahoma City Thunder sooner than expected, and will be available to play Sunday night against Phoenix.
Analysis: Westbrook hasn't played since tearing knee cartilage during the second game of last season's playoffs. General Manager Sam Presti said Sunday that Westbrook has met the requirements for his return. Westbrook first underwent surgery April 27 and again on Oct. 1 to remove a loose stitch from the first operation.
