Analysis: The 25-year old Middlebrooks suffered the injury in Friday's loss to Detroit when he attempted to field a line drive in the first inning. It's his second trip to the DL this season after missing 19 games with a strained right calf in April.

Analysis: Middlebrooks has been limited to four games this season because of a strained right calf. He went on the DL April 6, batting .231 with one home run and one RBI. Middlebrooks replaces Brock Holt, who was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after going hitless and making one of Boston's five errors in Thursday's loss to the New York Yankees. Holt appeared in seven games for the Red Sox, batting .348 with no homers and four RBIs.
