The former closer expects to make a decision on his next team within 24 hours, a source told ESPN.
Analysis: Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters Tuesday he has reached out to Papelbon personally. Should the free agent sign with Boston, Farrell said he would not be the closer. The Red Sox are seeking an eighth-inning setup man in the absence of Koji Uehara, who is sidelined indefinitely by a right pectoral strain. Papelbon, 35, broke into the majors with Boston in 2005, recording 219 saves and making four American League All-Star Games in seven seasons with the Red Sox.

Analysis: The 12-year veteran is having the worst season of his career and has made just two appearances since Washington acquired Mark Melancon at the trade deadline. Papelbon, who's making $11 million in the final year of his contract, is 0-2 with a 21.60 ERA over his last five games and owns a 4.37 ERA this season. Acquired from the Phillies at last year's trade deadline, the six-time All-Star made headlines with a dugout confrontation with teammate Bryce Harper in September.

Analysis: Papelbon hadn't given up a run since June 12, but he was also pitching a third straight day. Papelbon, who hadn't pitched on three consecutive days since May 29-31, insisted he was not tired. ''I think just location,'' Papelbon said.
