Analysis: Kazmir (6-3), who entered with an 11.17 ERA at PNC Park, retired 12 in a row after Erik Kratz's two-run single made it 4-0 in the first. The lefty allowed four hits, struck out four and walked four. "He was a completely different guy on the mound," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Kazmir's turnaround. He next pitches Saturday against the Rockies, against whom he permitted four runs in five innings in his lone 2016 start April 22 at Coors Field.

Analysis: Kazmir has failed to pitch past the fifth inning in three consecutive starts, yielding three runs in each, and has gone beyond the sixth only twice in 14 starts.

Analysis: Kazmir (4-3, 4.38 ERA) yielded one hit and one walk in six innings while fanning seven in a 5-0 victory. The Cubs had won their previous 23 games when Arrieta pitched. Kazmir is 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA in his last four starts and has 31 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings. He fanned a season-high 12 in a win over Cincinnati on May 25.
