Analysis: The 32-year-old was 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 38 games last season at Triple-A Pawtucket after going 0-2 with a 9.26 ERA for Boston from the start of the year through May 9. He is 11-7 with four saves and a 4.62 ERA over seven seasons in a major league career that began with Colorado and also included a stint with Arizona.

Analysis: Lopez, picked up from the White Sox for right-hander David Riske in June 2006, appeared in seven games, going 0-2 with a 9.26 ERA. "He's a nice kid," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "It was hard, but he was having trouble getting people out."

Analysis: The loss ended Boston's 11-game winning streak. Lopez dropped a ball thrown to him by Kevin Youkilis while getting over to first base. It was his first error of the season. Lopez had pitched two-thirds inning of relief.
