Analysis: Sabathia missed the Yankees' loss to Houston in the AL wild-card game last fall when he entered an alcohol rehabilitation program. He was 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA last year, when he was slowed by his surgically repaired right knee. After returning from the disabled list and using a tighter brace, he went 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA in his last five starts.

Sabathia says "I know it was a bad time of the season, but there was no other option for me but to get help. And I understand where, you know, fans would be upset and people don't understand, but it's a disease." The 35-year-old left-hander was 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA this season, slowed by a chronic knee injury.

Analysis: Sabathia's scheduled start at Yankee Stadium on Monday night was pushed back a day, with Bryan Mitchell pitching in his place. Manager Joe Girardi said the team had already planned to alter their rotation before he became aware of the incident and that it had no effect on the switch.

A Yankees spokesman said postgame that Sabathia showed no symptoms of dehydration during the game, but was sent to the Medical Center of Arlington after cramping while icing in the trainer's room after being taken out. The team provided no other update.
