The pitcher agreed Friday to an $8.5 million, one-year contract - $4.25 million less than the player option he turned down with Philadelphia.
Analysis: A 37-year-old right-hander, Burnett went 26-21 with a 3.41 ERA for Pittsburgh in 2012-13, helping the Pirates return to the postseason in 2013 following a 21-year drought. Burnett spurned an offer Pittsburgh last offseason and eventually signed with Philadelphia, where he went 8-18 with a 4.59 ERA in 34 starts. His 18 losses led the majors. Burnett and the Phillies both declined a $15 million mutual option, and the pitcher then turned down his player option.
Nov. 3 8:17 PM PT9:17 PM MT10:17 PM CT11:17 PM ET23:17 ET4:17 GMT12:17 9:17 PM MST11:17 PM EST11:47 PM VEN8:17 UAE10:17 PM CT-Burnett has become a free agent after declining a $12.75 million player option to return to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015. Burnett was 8-18 with a 4.59 ERA last season. The 37-year-old led the NL in losses.
Analysis: Burnett's decision helps the rebuilding Phillies trim a hefty payroll. They spent more than $184 million on a roster that finished last in the NL East for the first time since 2000. Burnett signed with the Phillies in February and earned $15 million in 2014. He is 155-150 with a 4.04 ERA in 16 seasons with five teams.

Analysis: Burnett became the first Phillies pitcher to record 18 losses since Hall of Famer Steve Carlton went 13-20 in 1973, and Philadelphia fell to the Atlanta Braves 4-2 Saturday night. He gave up four runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. "Obviously a frustrating year," Burnett said.

Analysis: Burnett (0-1, 2.73 ERA) took a four-hitter and a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning. But birthday boy Dee Gordon legged out a double to short right-center with one out, stole third and scored when pinch-hitter Justin Turner singled to left on Burnett's 105th and final pitch.
