Analysis: The team said Beltran can start throwing and hitting in about six weeks and can play baseball in approximately 12 weeks. The 37-yearold Beltran was limited to 32 outfield appearances this year because of the elbow. An eight-time All-Star, he signed a $45 million, three-year contract with New York during the offseason and hit a career-low .233 with 15 homers and 49 RBIs in 449 plate appearances.

Analysis: Beltran missed the first two games of the series against Cleveland with soreness behind his right knee and was in Wednesday's original lineup as the designated hitter. Beltran, a switch-hitter, is batting .216 with nine homers and 28 RBIs.

He played catch for the first time June 11 and has been working since then on rebuilding his arm strength with two sessions every three days. The aging Beltran is batting .220 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs, and feels no pain when swinging the bat. He expects to have surgery after the season to remove a loose chip.

Analysis: Beltran was batting fifth as the designated hitter Thursday. Infielder Scott Sizemore was designated for assignment. The switch-hitting Beltran was put on the DL on May 15 because of pain related to a bone spur in his right elbow.
