Nov. 11 3:57 PM PT4:57 PM MT5:57 PM CT6:57 PM ET11:57 PM GMT7:57 AM 北京时间-Varitek has exercised his $3 million option to stay with the Red Sox. Boston declined to exercise its $5 million club option on Monday, and Varitek then had two days to decide whether to exercise his player option at the lower price.
Analysis: The 37-year-old was Boston’s starting catcher for nine of 10 seasons through 2008, except in 2001 when he was limited to 51 games because of injury. He was the regular last season until Boston obtained Victor Martinez from Cleveland on July 31. He threw out just 10 of 118 runners attempting to steal this year.

Nov. 9 1:50 PM PT2:50 PM MT3:50 PM CT4:50 PM ET9:50 PM GMT5:50 AM 北京时间-The Red Sox declined their $5 option on Varitek - hardly a surprise considering he hit .134 from Aug. 1 to the end of the season and threw out three of 34 base stealers in that stretch.
Analysis: The veteran can stay with the team if he exercises his $3 million player option, but it would be in a backup capacity after Boston picked up Victor Martinez's option.
Sep. 25 8:11 PM PT9:11 PM MT10:11 PM CT11:11 PM ET4:11 AM GMT12:11 AM 北京时间-Varitek went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and a double play in the Red Sox's 9-5 loss to the Yankees on Friday night. New York also stole seven bases without being caught.
Analysis: Varitek is having about as bad of a finish to the season as is possible. Since Aug. 1, he is 11 for 89 (.124) with 31 strikeouts. Over that same stretch, base-stealers are 30 for 32 (93.8 percent) against Varitek. He hasn't caught one of them since Aug. 7, and his playing time is quickly decreasing. He may not see any action in the playoffs.
Aug. 22 8:06 AM PT9:06 AM MT10:06 AM CT11:06 AM ET4:06 PM GMT12:06 AM 北京时间-Varitek hit a solo homer in Friday's 20-11 loss to the New York Yankees.
Analysis: Varitek's previous home run was July 11 against Kansas City.
Jul. 31 1:03 PM PT2:03 PM MT3:03 PM CT4:03 PM ET9:03 PM GMT5:03 AM 北京时间-Varitek had three hits and three RBIs in Boston's 8-5 win over Oakland on Thursday, then may have lost his job 24 hours later.
Analysis: The Red Sox acquired catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez from Cleveland at the trade deadline, leaving Varitek's playing time in question. The team captain will still see action, but probably won't start four out of every five games as had been the case.
Jul. 5 9:30 AM PT10:30 AM MT11:30 AM CT12:30 PM ET5:30 PM GMT1:30 AM 北京时间-Varitek went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs as the Red Sox lost to the Mariners 3-2 on Saturday.
Analysis: Varitek is 11 for 31 (.355) with two homers, nine RBIs and six runs scored in his last 10 games. He was 1 for 25 (.040) with no homers, one RBI and eight strikeous over his previous eight contests.
May 29 2:08 PM PT3:08 PM MT4:08 PM CT5:08 PM ET10:08 PM GMT6:08 AM 北京时间-Varitek hit two home runs, then was one of four people ejected by young umpire Todd Tichenor during separate arguments in the seventh inning of Boston's 3-1 victory over Minnesota on Thursday.
Analysis: The ejection aside, Varitek continues to hit with surprising power. He entered the game hitting .222 with three homers from the left side of the plate this season, but hit both homers against right-hander Anthony Swarzak. He has 10 homers overall and needs just three more to match his total from all of last year.
May 23 11:20 AM PT12:20 PM MT1:20 PM CT2:20 PM ET7:20 PM GMT3:20 AM 北京时间-Varitek had two hits, including a home run off Johan Santana in the Red Sox's 5-3 loss to the Mets on Friday night.
Analysis: Varitek continues to put up much better numbers when hitting right-handed. He's batting .346 with five homers in 26 at-bats against lefties this year, as opposed to .217 with three homers in 92 at-bats versus righties.
May 21 10:26 AM PT11:26 AM MT12:26 PM CT1:26 PM ET6:26 PM GMT2:26 AM 北京时间-Varitek hit two homers in the Red Sox's 8-3 win over Toronto on Wednesday.
Analysis: His feat was overshadowed by David Ortiz's first home run of the season, but Varitek's power this year has also been surprising. He has seven homers after hitting 13 all of last season, although he is still hitting just .243.
Feb. 6 12:50 PM PT1:50 PM MT2:50 PM CT3:50 PM ET8:50 PM GMT4:50 AM 北京时间-Varitek and the Boston Red Sox have finalized a $5 million, one-year contract.
Analysis: The club announced the signing Friday, one week after reaching a preliminary agreement with their catcher and captain. Varitek will be starting his 13th major league season, all with Boston. The contract includes a $5 million salary this year a player option of $3 million or a team option of $5 million for 2010. Varitek hit .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs last year, then became a free agent after completing a $40 million, four-year contract with Boston.
