Analysis: When asked before the game if he was disappointed he hadn't seen the real Thome, Torre replied: "I've seen the real Jim Thome. Unfortunately, it was across the field when I played against him."

The deal also reunites Thome with Manny Ramirez, his teammate on the Cleveland Indians in the 1990s. The 39-year-old Thome is hitting .252 with 23 home runs and 74 RBI in 106 games.

Analysis: The 38-year-old designated hitter said he felt worn down at the end of last season, and it took him a little longer to recover. "Your body, as you get older, you feel different," Thome said. "Still, I feel good now." Thome hit 34 homers in 2008 with a .245 average and 90 RBIs. His long homer in the seventh inning of the one-game playoff against Minnesota on Sept. 30 gave the Sox a 1-0 win. It was his 541st career home run.
