Jays acquire OF Upton Jr. from Padres

TORONTO (AP) Outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. was already in Toronto with the San Diego Padres when they traded him across the diamond to the Blue Jays.

Joining his new team was a lot more complicated than walking down the hall.

The Blue Jays acquired Upton and cash from the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez. They also added reliever Joaquin Benoit from the Mariners for right-hander Drew Storen in a deal announced shortly after a 7-6, 12-inning win over San Diego.

Ventura insists he can work with Sale

CHICAGO (AP) Robin Ventura insists he can work with Chris Sale despite the suspended ace's critical comments about the White Sox manager.

Sale is serving a five-day, unpaid ban after he destroyed throwback uniforms the team was supposed to wear for his start Saturday. Sale told MLB.com in a story published Monday that he doesn't regret standing up for what he believed and said Ventura should have stood up for his players.

Shields pitches White Sox by Cubs 3-0

CHICAGO (AP) Out went Chris Sale and the shredded 1976 throwback jerseys. In came 1983 uniforms and a four-game winning streak.

James Shields allowed four singles in 7 2/3 innings, Adam Eaton homered and the White Sox stayed unbeaten since their ace's suspension by beating the Cubs 3-0 on Tuesday night in Chicago's crosstown rivalry.

Chapman has awkward intro with Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) Star closer Aroldis Chapman joined the Cubs on Tuesday, arriving to a mixed reaction in Chicago and saying he couldn't remember what management told him about off-field expectations and behavior.

After Chapman's awkward introductory news conference, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein insisted Chapman understands what the Cubs expect of him after an offseason domestic violence incident.
