Baez hits 2 HRs as Cubs avoid NLCS sweep

(TSX / STATS) -- CHICAGO -- Wade Davis peered toward home plate and prepared to throw his 48th and most important pitch of the game Wednesday night.

With a runner on first base, Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Cody Bellinger represented the winning run at the plate. Justin Turner and his imposing bat waited on deck.

The Chicago closer unleashed a 92 mph four-seam fastball. It saved both the game and the season for the Cubs, as Bellinger grounded into a game-ending double play.


Tanaka bests Keuchel, Yankees go up 3-2

(TSX / STATS) -- NEW YORK -- Thirty-two minutes into Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, the New York Yankees scored their first run off Dallas Keuchel in a postseason setting.

About 25 minutes later, the New York scored another run off the ace left-hander, and 49,647 fans at Yankee Stadium along with the Yankees themselves, exhaled thinking, "Finally, we got a couple of runs off this guy."


Yanks on verge of historic 2nd comeback

(TSX / STATS) -- NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees, the most accomplished franchise in American sports, are on the verge of an unprecedented baseball feat. The Houston Astros, meanwhile, are trending toward sadly familiar territory.

The Yankees moved to the edge of the World Series with a 5-0 victory over the Astros on Wednesday night in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium. New York leads the series three games to two and will try to win the pennant in Game 6, scheduled for Friday night in Houston.


Cubs 2B Baez breaks out at the plate

(TSX / STATS) -- CHICAGO -- For 20 consecutive postseason at-bats, Javier Baez failed to collect a hit, forcing Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon to weigh the value of Baez's value as a defender against his inability to make things happen at the plate.

However, with the Cubs on the brink of elimination Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Baez finally broke though. And by doing so, the star second baseman helped the Cubs remain alive in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.

BoSox's Ramirez, Rodriguez have surgery

(TSX / STATS) -- Boston Red Sox first baseman and designated hitter Hanley Ramirez underwent successful left shoulder surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be ready for the start of the 2018 season, the team announced.

Ramirez, 33, had a left shoulder arthroscopy and debridement procedure performed by Dr. James Andrews at the Andrews Institute in Pensacola, Fla.


Red Sox interview Cora, Gardenhire next?

(TSX / STATS) -- Astros bench coach Alex Cora took a break from Houston's playoff run to interview for the Boston Red Sox's vacant managerial position Sunday.

Cora met with Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski in New York on the Astros' off day. Houston, which won the first two games of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees, plays Game 3 on Monday at Yankee Stadium.


Maddon expects to be fined for comments

(TSX / STATS) -- Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Sunday he expects to get fined for his comments criticizing a call at home plate getting overturned in the seventh inning of Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday.

Charlie Culberson scored the final run of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-2 win after it was ruled Chicago catcher Willson Contreras did not clear a path to home plate.
