Fehr: Up to players to decide on probe

(AP Photo/Matt Slocum)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The World Series was slipping away from the San Francisco Giants.

A botched grounder led to a three-run deficit, and they were in danger of falling behind the Kansas City Royals three games to one.

Instead of panic, it was time for some Panda-monium.

Royals' middle relievers falter in loss

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The plan this postseason has been pretty straightforward for the Kansas City Royals: Take an early lead and hand the game over to a terrific trio of hard-throwing relievers.

A four-run third inning provided the lead Saturday night. But starter Jason Vargas got knocked out early and Jason Frasor, Danny Duffy and Brandon Finnegan failed to provide the bridge to the back end of the bullpen in an 11-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants in Game 4 of the World Series.

Royals say Giants made dirt extra muddy

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) When it comes to the Royals' running game, Kansas City manager Ned Yost thinks the San Francisco Giants are being sticks in the mud.

Bumgarner to face Shields in Game 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) When it came down to it, the San Francisco Giants decided that having a fully rested Madison Bumgarner starting one game was preferable than trying to send him out twice on short rest.

So Bumgarner will take his sterling postseason resume into Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday night on his usual four days' rest when the Giants take on James Shields and the Kansas City Royals in the final game of the season in San Francisco.

KC loses first Series replay challenge

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Kansas City manager Ned Yost could tell he was going to lose his challenge, even before the umpires got the final word from the replay room.

Yost became the first manager to challenge a call in the World Series under Major League Baseball's expanded review system, asking for another look in Game 4 on Saturday after San Francisco's Joaquin Arias was ruled safe on a pickoff play at second base.

Royals claim OF Sierra from White Sox

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Making a rare 40-man roster move in the middle of the World Series, the AL champion Kansas City Royals claimed outfielder Moises Sierra off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

To clear a roster spot, the Royals designated right-hander Liam Hendriks for assignment. Hendricks was acquired from Toronto on July 29 with catcher Erik Kratz for third baseman Danny Valencia, and he has not played since Sept. 23.
