Jays get Tigers' Price for 3 prospects

DETROIT (AP) Toronto acquired All-Star left-hander David Price from the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, the second major move in less than a week by the Blue Jays as they chase their first postseason appearance since 1993.

After obtaining slugging shortstop Troy Tulowitzki from Colorado, the Blue Jays tried to shore up their rotation by adding Price, likely the top remaining starting pitcher on the market.

"These types of players, the great superstar players, rarely become available," Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "We think we're a good team and adding a guy like Price we think makes us that much stronger and will give us a chance to win. It's as simple as that."

Latos, Wood to Dodgers in big 3-way deal

ATLANTA (AP) The first-place Los Angeles Dodgers have bolstered their pitching staff, acquiring Mat Latos from the Miami Marlins and Alex Wood, Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan from the Atlanta Braves in a 13-player deal.

The rebuilding Braves also gave up top infield prospect Jose Peraza in Thursday's trade, paying a hefty price largely to land 30-year-old Cuban infielder Hector Olivera at a steep discount. Atlanta also got left-handed reliever Paco Rodriguez and minor league pitcher Zachary Bird from Los Angeles.

Holliday back to DL with quad injury

ST. LOUIS (AP) Matt Holliday is back on the disabled list.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed the All-Star outfielder on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a recurrence of his right quadriceps injury.

Pineda placed on DL, Sabathia to start

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) New York Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right flexor forearm muscle strain and was replaced by CC Sabathia for Thursday night's series finale at the Texas Rangers

Pineda, 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA, missed all of 2012 and '13 following shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder and was sidelined from April 23 to Aug. 13 last year with a right shoulder muscle injury.

Zobrist, batting .268 with six homers and 31 RBIs, was batting sixth against Toronto right-hander Marco Estrada.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) The New York Yankees have acquired utility player Dustin Ackley from the Seattle Mariners for a pair of minor leaguers.

New York sent right-hander Jose Ramirez and outfielder Ramon Flores to the Mariners in the deal completed Thursday, a day before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Pirates add Blanton, designate Worley

CINCINNATI (AP) Vance Worley was excited when he found out that former teammate Joe Blanton would be joining the Pittsburgh Pirates' bullpen. He was surprised at what came next.

The Pirates designated Worley for assignment on Thursday to open a roster spot for Blanton, who will essentially move into his role. Pittsburgh acquired Blanton from Kansas City for $150,000 early Thursday.

Red Sox DFA Nava to add pitching depth

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Red Sox have designated outfielder Daniel Nava for assignment in a move to add pitching depth.

The Red Sox recalled right-handed reliever Jonathan Aro from Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday to take Nava's place. Boston also optioned left-handed reliever Tommy Layne to Triple-A to make room for right-hander Jean Machi, who was claimed off waivers from San Francisco this week.
