Sabathia into alcohol rehab, no playoffs

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, File)

NEW YORK (AP) CC Sabathia walked into manager Joe Girardi's office in Baltimore on Sunday and made a stunning admission: He has an alcohol problem.

"The first thing he said is, `I need help,'" Girardi said Monday during a workout at Yankee Stadium for the AL wild-card game. "I was shocked."

Sabathia surprised many in the Yankees organization by revealing his problem. And with the team's help, the burly left-hander is checking into a rehab center and will miss the postseason, a setback to the pitching staff the day before New York meets Houston in the AL wild-card game.

Severino, Nova among 8 in Yanks' bullpen

NEW YORK (AP) Starting pitchers Luis Severino and Ivan Nova are part of an eight-man bullpen on the New York Yankees' roster for their AL wild-card game against Houston.

The rest of the bullpen behind Tuesday night starter Masahiro Tanaka includes Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances, Justin Wilson, Adam Warren, James Pazos and Bryan Michell.

Gomez on Astros' wild-card roster

NEW YORK (AP) Center fielder Carlos Gomez, who missed the final regular-season series with a strained left chest muscle, is on the roster for Houston's AL wild-card game against the New York Yankees.

Gomez is expected to start for Houston on Tuesday night. Also on the roster is right-hander Mike Fiers, a starter who threw a no-hitter in August and has one relief appearance for the Astros this season since he joined Houston with Gomez in a trade from Milwaukee.

Molina to try to play with thumb splint

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will try to play in the NL Division Series while wearing a splint to protect his injured left thumb.

The All-Star, widely considered the best defensive catcher in the game, met with a hand specialist on Monday.

Nationals fire Williams, entire staff

WASHINGTON (AP) In describing what he will look for in a manager to replace Matt Williams, Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzo might have been pointing out exactly what he felt went wrong with the man he hired two years ago and fired Monday.

"Leadership qualities, knowledge of the game, X's and O's are all important. Communication in the clubhouse, communication within the coaching staff, is vital," Rizzo said during a telephone conference call. "Experience is always helpful. It always adds a layer of expertise to anybody's resume. We feel that where we're at in our timetable of winning a championship, we certainly would lean toward someone that has some type of managerial experience, especially at the major league level."

A's promote Forst to GM, Beane to VP

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics wanted to make sure they could keep David Forst in the front office after other clubs sought to hire him, so they promoted him to general manager Monday and elevated Billy Beane to executive vice president of baseball operations.

"Long overdue," Beane said of Forst's promotion.

Padres fire interim manager Murphy

SAN DIEGO (AP) Admitting his San Diego Padres "didn't have the right formula" this season, general manager A.J. Preller says he's looking for a manager who can get the underachieving team to play at a high level.

Preller fired interim manager Pat Murphy on Sunday after the Padres finished 74-88 and fourth in the NL West, 18 games behind the division champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cubs set to visit Bucs in wild-card game

CHICAGO (AP) No matter how the playoffs turn out for the Chicago Cubs, manager Joe Maddon wanted to know one thing.

"How can you possibly be disappointed with anything our players have done this year?" he wondered.

Rebuilt 'pen helps Royals reach playoffs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) By the time the Kansas City Royals had run roughshod through the American League playoffs last year, everyone in baseball knew exactly what H-D-H meant.

Herrera, Davis, Holland. The big three relievers at the back of their bullpen.

Diamondbacks fire pitching coach Harkey

PHOENIX (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks have fired pitching coach Mike Harkey.

Harkey held the position for two seasons and had been retained on the staff after manager Kirk Gibson was fired a year ago.
